Name the missing control
An add-on is valuable when it closes a specific detection, recovery, security, or labor gap. Document scope, retention, access, dependencies, and the failure modes it does not cover.
Avoid buying overlapping dashboards while leaving restore tests, credential recovery, or after-hours ownership unresolved.
- Control objective
- Included systems
- Retention and export
- Failure notification
Keep an exit path
Confirm how data, configurations, logs, and credentials can be exported. Managed firewalls and databases can become recovery blockers when only the provider can reconstruct them.
Review add-ons after incidents and architecture changes. A service that once reduced risk can become redundant or incomplete.
Remove the add-on in a tabletop exercise and identify the exact detection, recovery, or labor capability that disappears.
